Hello, I'm Sunil Gira here on my show, Better Than Yesterday. Today's topic is why young professionals are rethinking success. For many decades, the questions were how much you earn. The success was defined by the salary and few more factors. Earlier, people used to say that one should study hard, get a good degree, get a good job, progress in the job, have a car, have a house, have good savings, and finally, when he retires, he should be able to settle his children and have sufficient savings for retirement. It was like the jobs in PSUs such as Bilai Steel Plant, Steel Authority of India, Bharat Heavy Electricals, or jobs in banks, State Bank of India, HDFC, ICICI, or government jobs, IS officers' jobs, lawyers' jobs, chartered accountants' jobs. Fine. However, that was a generation where there was a lot of insecurity, and the idea was to have stability. It could have been the effect of settlement of huge population who came after partition of India. And the idea was to somehow take care of the family, children, old parents, settle down. Very good. We must respect our elders who lived through hardships, worked hard, and provided a good standard of living for the family. However, today the times have changed. Now, young professionals define success in a different way. If a person has got good salary but he's unhappy, he feels empty, he works hard but has almost no time for his near and dear ones, time visits, family, time visits, close friends. This has been happening. There are a lot of companies who have employees have faced burnout. It's an open complaint in large companies such as Google, Amazon, Infosys, Wipro. Now people, after only working for two to three years in all, feel their emptiness. They do not have feeling of fulfillment. Secondly, we have social media today, which gives us an idea that what many people are doing around the world. We see successful people such as Sri Dhar Bembu of Zoho, Praject Pa Koli, a YouTuber, a brand ambassador. People have also seen that many companies, startups have risen very fast. However, they failed also very fast. There are many examples. Companies like Enron or startup in India like Baijus. We also have seen a lot of CEOs of the biggest companies in the world who have been ousted, like John Scully in Apple, Vishal Sikka in enforces in 2017, and so many more. Now, I would like to ask what success is. As per the young professionals today, success means freedom. That means if a person wants to work just for two days in a week and want to spend remaining five days with his family, with his parents, he should be able to do that. This has been possible by many people. And they are very satisfied with spending time with peace of mind. They have good sleep, they have happiness, they enjoy holidays with their friends in different parts of the country. Now, what are the opportunities available today? Suppose you're talking about a teacher. A teacher can take online classes, she can be a consultant, she can be part of a community, she could be a writer. I would give you an example of Projecta Koli. She's a brand ambassador, she's a YouTuber, she's an actress. Internationally, there are people who have done many jobs and they have a lot of wealth, like Nawel Ravikanth. He's an Indian-born investor in USA, he's a consultant, he has been interviewed by all leading broadcasts. So today the opportunities are unlimited. Young professionals can take up a job, however, they need not depend only on one income. In other words, they don't have one boss, they have a carrier portfolio. There are many more examples I would like to give here. A person in 30s, in his 30s, maybe a branch manager of a medium-sized capital equipment manufacturing company. He could be himself an entrepreneur and a manufacturer of capital equipment. In his 50s, he can be a podcaster where he interviews other industrialists and he is in a position to give his knowledge, share his own knowledge, and the knowledge of the various successful people to lakes of people who hear his podcast. I'm sure you would adjust today's podcast. I would request in case some people want to collaborate with us, they could communicate with us.
